Dr Helena Burden

MbChb, MD, FRCS (Urol, Eng)
Consultant Urological Surgeon

Helena is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at the Bristol Urological Institute, Southmead Hospital in Bristol. She has a subspecialist interest in non-muscle invasive bladder cancer, and she is the Bladder Cancer lead in Bristol.

She is an elected member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) Oncology committee and a member of the European Association of Urology. She recently chaired the UK GIRFT ‘Suspected Bladder Cancer’ guidelines and a committee member for the GIRFT TULA guidance.

She has an active research interest, having previously undertaken a research degree (MD) in Urology diagnostics. She has authored a significant number of scientific peer reviewed papers and is regularly invited to speak on bladder cancer at Local, National and International levels. She is currently on the Bristol Principal Investigator for two bladder cancer studies - HIVEC HEAT and the MOONRISE study.

Her second passion lies in medical education, she is currently Education co-lead for ST for BAUS and module co-lead for bladder cancer for ST3 Bootcamp, having previously held titles of Honorary lecturer at Bristol University, Bristol Urology Education lead, SW Consultant education lead and previous Director of the Bristol Urological Institute for courses and teaching. She has recently established a Severn Urology Portfolio Pathway teaching programme and is working with BAUS for this to become a nationally adopted programme.

She also enjoys spending time with her family and triathlons in her spare time.
